General Information

Somers Lacrosse Association General Information

The objectives of the Association shall be:

 

  1. To encourage and promote the sport of lacrosse in the town of Somers, CT and in the Somers, CT Public School System,
  2. To do all in its power to protect and advance the interest of lacrosse and to encourage sportsmanlike competition.
  3. To annually sponsor the Paul Bowers Memorial Lacrosse Tournament
  4. To award scholarships annually via the Paul Bowers Memorial Scholarship program

 

Lacrosse information for all seasons

 

The Spring Season usually begins April 1 and runs through the 3rd week of June (playoffs). Weather and field conditions determine the official start date, which may be prior to April 1. Clinics and practices may be offered in March if permission is granted for pre-season gym and field time.


Time Commitment for spring

  

  • Instructional- grades K-2- practice once per week
  • Bantam Program: grades 3/4-Play an average of three times per week, with one on weekend
  • Junior Program: grades 5/6- Play an average of 3.5 times per week, with one on weekend
  • Senior Program :grades 7/8-Play an average of 4 times per week, with one on weekend
  • Parents: Our program does not require individual fundraising efforts but we do ask that each parent volunteer  at least 2-4 hours of their time at the Paul Bowers Memorial Tournament the first weekend in June. ( Please note that the tournament is our sole fundraiser of the year)
  • Games are usually scheduled for practice nights to keep commitments consistent from week to week. As a league, we also participate in 2-3 jamborees each season, held on weekends. The jamboree schedule is finalized in early April


The Somers Lacrosse Association is able to provide the following benefits from the Bowers profits;

 

  • Grants 2 Scholarships per year of $2000 each to a graduating High School senior
  • Defers an estimated $50 off registration cost per individual at youth level.
  • Allocates money so players do not have to pay for tournaments like other towns
  • Allocates money for capital improvement projects
  • Allocates  money for field improvements
  • Pays for all Coach training
  • Supplements the costs of providing clinics.
  • Provides Scholarships , grants, and equipment for special request players
  • Alleviates the need for individual families to do other fund raising efforts.
  • Supplements end of year team celebrations
  • Allocates money to upgrade field equipment

Here's what is required:

 

Boys Programs

helmet    * NOCSAE certified shoulder pads  * elbow/arm pads * gloves * stick * mouth guard * cleats(outdoor lax)

*rib pads—Bantams and Juniors (optional for Seniors) *cup protection

 

Girls Programs

Mandatory

Women’s lacrosse stick – there is a major difference between boys and girls sticks, including the stringing and pocket depth. Be sure to buy a women’s lacrosse stick. Length should be between 35.5” and 43.25”, measured from top of stick head to end of shaft. * Goggles – US Lacrosse ASTM safety certified eyewear * Mouth guard (must be colored, not clear, and no strap) * Cleats (soccer or lacrosse cleats made for grass surfaces

 

  • Note: Strict rules around NO jewelry of any kind or hard hair barrettes


Optional (girls)  Gloves – form fitting, non-slip lacrosse gloves with a gripping palm; recommended for grades 5-8 * Helmets – Flexible Protective Womens Lacrosse Helmet (hard-shell helmet with full face-mask, like boys lacrosse, is only permitted for Girls Lacrosse Goalies)

Goalies

Equipment will be supplied by Somers Lacrosse for players playing the goalie position.

  • Note for early spring practices: It can be COLD! Please be prepared for cold or rainy practices and games by providing your players with appropriate cold weather layers.

 

Fields

Our home games and practices are held at Somers School Complex and Firehouse fields.

 

Inclement Weather

Each team has an email/phone call system in place to notify players and parents of cancellations. You may update your contacts through your member profile.
